The Big Orange Blog commissioned Research 2000 to poll Louisiana this week. They polled the Senate race using Charlie Melancon and Don Cazayoux as stand-ins for strong Democratic candidate:
If Mr. Perkins gives him a fight for the fundie vote in a Republican primary, Vitter very well may be in serious trouble once he gets in a general election, as he will have to shore the GOP base while trying to convince independents that he's got their concerns covered up in Washington.
But here's one of the nuggets of gold from that poll:
Candidate
Poll %
David Vitter (R)
43%
Jay Dardenne (R)
32%
Stormy Daniels (R)
1%
If Secretary of State Jay Dardenne were to throw his hat into a Republican primary, he would force Vitter into a run-off. As for Ms. Daniels 1% showing in this poll ... few folks even know who she is who she is. Once she gets on the air, barnstorms the state, meets Louisianans, there should be another poll done. Then we'll know if her candidacy is for real. Until then, it's too early to count her out.
