| Earlier today, Politico reported that Senator Landrieu would be a "no" vote on any health care reform bill with a public option:
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) said on Tuesday that she is opposed to the creation of a public health care plan patients could opt into that would compete with private insurance.
"No, I'm not open to it. I'm not open to a public option," said Landrieu. "However, I will remain open to a compromise, a full compromise. Public option is not something that I support. I don't think it's the right way to go."
You may be wondering what the public option is. Essentially, any reform bill with a public option will give folks the choice of keeping their employer based coverage or the option of buying into either Medicaid/Medicare or the Federal Employees Health Insurance Program.
Senator, why are you not open to a public option? Might it be, Senator, that you received $606,716 from individuals and PAC's associated with the health care/health insurance industries?
In any event, please explain why, when you represent 850,000 uninsured Louisianans (nearly 20% of our state's population), you are against the one reform that will ensure they have affordable health insurance?

UPDATE at 8:50 PM: It seems that Senator Landrieu has broken a pledge where she expressed support for Health Care for America NOW statement of common purpose, which included the following:
A choice of a private insurance plan, including keeping the insurance you have if you like it, or a public insurance plan without a private insurer middleman that guarantees affordable coverage. |
