A Majority of the Public Wants Health Care Reform

All I hear lately from the FOX News broadcasts is about how the country is opposed to health care reform. Granted, there are quite a few polls out there that show more folks (but not a majority) oppose the current health care bills being debated in Congress. But none of those polls ask the obvious follow-up question: Are you opposed to the bills because they don't go far enough, or because you're opposed to health care reform overall?

Finally, a pollster asked that question and the results are below:

So, 37% of 535 folks is 197.95, so let's round that up to 198. Add those 198 to the folks that said they favored the reforms being discussed in Congress, and you have a majority of 59% supporting health care reform (and that's the same whether you rounded the 197.95 up or down).

When will folks like the Spinning Sinning Senator David Vitter get that? Oh, wait, he's part of the GOP caucus that a majority of the country believes is opposing the bill simply for the sake of denying President Obama a victory on one of his campaign promises:

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
This doesn't make sense.  It's easy to get 59% of Americans to line up behind vague, unspecified "health care reforms".  Everyone hates the medical system except the insurance companies.

But the only relevant issue right NOW is the bill that will be voted on in Congress, which will absolutely not satisfy those 198 people who don't think the current efforts go far enough.  I'm tempted to agree with them.  Why pass a hugely expensive bill loaded down with deals and perks for special interests, if it doesn't even fix the problems with health care to a satisfactory level?  C'mon, Democrats.  You're already being labeled as Socialist; might as well use the opportunity to push for a public option.

DId you even read the question the poll posed? (0.00 / 0)
Because it asked folks do you support the health care reform proposals presently being discussed?  That insinuates that they're talking about the bill that will be voted on in Congress.

While I would support a Medicare buy-in for all, which is what the public option should have been from the start, I don't think the votes are there.  I base that on the fact that 30 Democrats voted NO in the House last time.  That means they've got to get either Blue Dogs to vote YEA, or progressives to realize that this represents the best chance for health care reform since the 1970's when Teddy Kennedy turned down a proposal from Nixon for universal health care because it wasn't everything he wanted it to be.

Take what we can get for now.  Fix it later.
