(We welcome Luke White, President of LSU College Democrats, to Daily Kingfish. - promoted by pointecoupeedemocrat)
Last week, the indiscretions of Sen. David Vitter's past were made public. Vitter went underground for nearly a week as the story broke; only letting us know that he asked for and received forgiveness from God. His wife, who during the Clinton years claimed that she preferred the actions of Lorena Bobbit over those of Hillary Clinton, stood by her man. And in a blatant attempt to throw off the evening news, their joint press conference was held late in the day and hidden behind Bobby Jindal's formal announcement for Governor.
Recently, many groups across the state took sides. I commend the UNO College Republicans for calling for Vitter's resignation, and I am disheartened that they were rebuffed by their parent organization, the Louisiana Federation of College Republicans. Other Republican groups have also stood beside Vitter.
It truly is sickening to think that the self-proclaimed "family values" candidate engaged in the highest levels of hypocrisy. The moral high ground he maintained, coupled with the messages of condemnation he sent, all while holding his family in his arms in many campaign ads certainly convinced many Louisianans to vote for him. Yet at the time of the filming of his ads, he had violated among the holiest of Ten Commandments. But the issues of hypocrisy at this highest level are not the sole reason I, with other College Democrats in the state, am calling for his resignation. Sen. Vitter simply can no longer be an effective member of the US Senate.
And before I suffer charges of hypocrisy of my own, it is important to note that the College Democrats of Louisiana continue to call for the resignation of Congressman William Jefferson. At a time in Louisiana, where our state is still in the fight of hurricane recovery, we deserve and require solid, credible representation in the Senate. No one will want to put their name on a bill with David Vitter; no one will stand next to Vitter at a podium, and David Vitter will never again grace the lawn of the White House for a signing ceremony.
Bills for Louisiana will have trouble finding sponsors simply because lawmakers will not want to be mentioned in relation to Vitter.
How can Sen. Vitter effectively serve as US Senator any longer?
The blows that Vitter's hypocrisy have caused to his credibility, have not just affected his family, as his wife said. The people of Louisiana effectively lost a seat in the United States Senate this week. In the last two years, we have taken too many hits, and David Vitter's lack of credibility and lack of character have only made the wounds deeper and more painful.
