LA-GOV: Fundraising Numbers

Yesterday, "Bobby" Jindal's campaign announced that it raised $2.7 million over the last three months, leaving them with $6.4 million cash on hand.

The other Republican in the race, John Georges, who made his fortune by supplying convenience stores with liquor and tobacco, not to mention owning video poker machines throughout Louisiana, has donated $6.3 million of his own money to this race, and he has $7 million cash on hand.

State Senator Walt Boasso, who recently switched parties to run as a Democrat, $1.4 million to date, but he has spent a ton on commercials, leaving him with $232,250 on hand.

Last, but certainly not least, longtime Democrat Foster Campbell donated his campaign $400,000, raised $265,000 which leaves him with $1.3 million cash in hand.

All other candidates are committing their own funds to this race ... which begs the question, who is giving "Bobby" Jindal his money? Who will he be beholden to if he wins? This is something that I plan to look into if possible.

UPDATE: I just took a look at Jindal's press release touting his fundraising numbers. They are calling this campaign a "once-in-a-lifetime" chance to take Louisiana back. Hmmm ... didn't Jindal run 4 years ago? Or was I dreaming?

Ryan,

The other interesting story that came out this morning was about the money that is about to be spent on television spots from John Georges and from the Louisiana Democratic Party.

From the Shreveport Times:

"Georges' buy will be as high as 1,800 points in some markets, which means the average television viewer will see his ads at least 18 times a week. This will be many voters' introduction to Georges, who has been quietly traveling the state.

"These present me as a family man and a business man," Georges said. "These are to let people know who I am. You need to know people before you are willing to listen to them"

The Louisiana Democratic Party also will have an 1,800-point buy targeting Jindal that will begin "within 10 days," party Chairman Chris Whittington said.

"It's a big bang. It is going to be truthful about his votes. A lot of people don't know about his votes, and we're going to educate them. A lot of people are not going to like it very much.""

Given Boasso's surge in the polls after his own ad grab last month, it seems likely many in the Republican camp may switch over to millionaire businessman and "anti-career politician" John Georges.

Coupled with informative pieces from the LA Dems on Jindal's paltry voting record in the House, his status as the front-runner will probably be a thing of the past, which means we can anticipate some nasty Rovian commercials from political hitman, Roy Fletcher. Given Fletcher's track record, which was thoroughly analyzed by PCD, we know he is not likely to play nice.

The recent Boasso poll shows two things: 1) The numbers are out there to take down Jindal and 2) Jindal's own numbers are soft and likely to become even softer as voters begin learning about this man's lousy record.

Chris Whittington may be right when he says a lot of people won't like it when the Dems start running commercials about Jindal's record, but Chris, many more people will be saying, "It's about time!"

So, it looks like John Georges is actually going to run.  That is good news for the Democrats because Georges could guarantee a runoff if he really starts to move.

It looks like Boasso's ads really did some good.  Unfortunately, he is running a little low on money.  Foster Campbell is also running a little low.

I think the three minor candidates will each get several percentage points of votes.  If Rev. Brown is the only black person to run, he could pick up 3 or 4 % just by being on the ballot.  The libertarian could get a few % because libertarians, even in ultraconservative Louisiana, have to be infuriated at what Bush has done to our civil rights.  And the independent (I forget his name)just celebrated raising $50,000 so he is, at least, going to make a little splash.  And a lot of people are disgusted with both political parties and are going independent.

Best of all, Jindal is still so closely linked to Vitter that he can't campaign freely because reporters only want to know about his relationship with Vitter.  So, his campaign will be "canned" for awhile anyway.  His campaign trips have become a joke.  He says nothing!

So, we may have a runoff after all.  But, will a Democrat be in it?  Georges has a great deal of money and, so far, has a good image (despite how he made his money!)  He could be a dangerous candidate.  In the terrible event, it comes down to Jindal and Georges in a runoff, I am going with Georges as the lesser of two evils.  Jindal would be a dangerous governor because of his close relationship to Bush and the right-wing.  Louisiana, with all its oil money, could become a cash cow for the ultraconservatives if Jindal is governor!  Georges is more independent.

It is getting exciting and more candidates will, no doubt, enter the race!

JIndal had $1.3 million at this point in '03, i believe. (0.00 / 1)
Foster has roughly the same amount.  He's not running low by any means ... he's running a jungle primary campaign designed to get him in the runoff.

"I was against NAFTA and CAFTA, and I'll be against SHAFTA."

B.R. Advocate on Georges & Campbell (0.00 / 0)
The Baton Rouge Advocate(http://www.2theadvoc...) today has good coverage on John Georges ads that are starting and on Foster Campbell's request for five debates.  Campbell is aiming his debate challenges toward Jindal.

I am thinking that Georges will get a lot of support from Vitter supporters who are upset at Jindal stabbing their boy in the back.

Campbell sounds pretty aggressive toward Jindal.  That is a change for Campbell who hasn't mentioned the other candidates much, so far.

These developments may mean a weakening of Jindal's support.  The other candidates are attacking him personally now and trying to smoke him out of hiding.  Jindal is still trying to stay above the fray.

Recent photos of Jindal remind me of a kid with his hand caught in the cookie jar!  He has that sheepish look!
