LA-Sen: Kennedy Switches Parties

(Oh, it's on. It's gonna be Landrieu v. Kennedy for the Senate. The only question I will ask of the erstwhile Treasurer is "Are you going to run for the Senate, and if so, doesn't Louisiana deserve someone who will be our FULL-TIME Treasurer?" - promoted by ryan)

[First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races.]

Six weeks after Louisiana's highest ranking elected Republican, Senator David Vitter, made it clear that he cheated on his wife with prostitutes, the state's Treasurer, John N. Kennedy, declared that "I have concluded that the Republican Party is the party that best reflects my values today." Some great values, huh? Treasurer Kennedy is now a Republican, which heightens expectations that he will challenge Senator Mary Landrieu in 2008. Hopefully Democrats will run a credible candidate against Kennedy, if only to get him on the record with answers to questions like "If re-elected, do you promise Louisiana voters to serve your full term?" and "If you're just going to run for another office next year, why should voters re-elect you to this office this year?"

Republican Kennedy Running for the Senate (0.00 / 0)
Of course, this is no surprise.  I wish Kennedy had stayed a Democrat but it is no great loss.

Kennedy appears to be an honest, hard-working person but, as a campaigner, he is a well-known dud.  If he is Landrieu's major Republican competitor, she should win fairly easily although Kennedy will have a pot full of campaign funds, particularly if Jindal wins in the first primary.

Of Kennedy's speaking ability, it has been said: "If you have insomnia, listen to one of Kennedy's speeches.  Your insomnia problems will be over."

Landrieu's major problem for 2008 will be if she stays aloft from the governor's race this year and doesn't make a strong endorsement.  That will upset a lot of Democrats including me!

What has she got to lose?  The Republicans are going to be gunning for her, anyway!

She'll be smart to stay neutral until the runoff, OR (0.00 / 0)
unless it looks like one of the Democrats running is closing the gap with Jindal.  That means no endorsement until 1 week out.

"I was against NAFTA and CAFTA, and I'll be against SHAFTA."

Landrieu Could Make a Pro-Democrat Endorsement (0.00 / 0)
Landrieu could make a strong pro-Democrat endorsement in the first primary without naming anyone specifically.

First Boasso, then Kennedy.  Politicians changing parties.  Even in Louisiana, parties are becoming less important.

Apparently Republican Georges is toying with changing to either Democrat or Independent.  It would probably help the anti-Jindal folks if he chooses to go Independent.  A lot of voters are pissed off at both parties and might go with him.

The "changing parties" trend could affect Nagin (D) who is believed to be a closet Republican.  I don't think he would change to Republican but he might choose to go Independent if he runs.  He is mad at both major parties.

Thank God that politics is beginning to heat up a little in Louisiana.  If everybody keeps quite, Jindal will win in a walk.  If things get stirred up enough, Jindal will have to come out into the open and fight (as per the religious issue.)

If Jindal can be smoked into the open, he will lose ground, fast!  He does not make a good impression on TV!
