BREAKING: Police Clash with Housing Demolition Protesters at NOLA City Hall

According to the AP, violence broke out between the New Orleans Police Department and folks who planned to voice their opinion over the planned demolition of federal housing in New Orleans.

Since the New Orleans' City Charter requires City Council approval of any demolition, the City Council set a hearing. The Council chambers seat less than 300. Once the chambers reached capacity, folks were turned away. Some of those turned away went outside onto the grounds of City Hall and an impromptu protest, complete with chants, broke out. For those not familiar with New Orleans City Hall, there is an iron gate that separates the Council's chamber building from City Hall itself.

Some protestors chose to storm the gate, with some able to squeeze themselves through the gate, before the New Orleans Police Department started using chemical spray and stun devices to subdue the crowd.

An ambulance was deployed to City Hall, but the AP is unsure if it was a precautionary measure or whether someone was actually hospitalized or received medical care.

According to New Orleans Nation, there were protests inside the Council Chamber itself. Apparently, Council Member Stacey Head blew a kiss to the protesters, which only inflamed the protesters.

You might wish to change the title of your post to "Housing Demolition Protestors Clash with Police at NOLA City Hall."

The police were present to preserve order inside Council chambers, but the agitators weren't only interested in disrupting those proceedings -- which is itself a violation of a democratic process. The police were cajoled and attacked.

Don't forget, the Council is an elected body. How many of those agitators seeking to disrupt the Council proceedings were represented by a Council member?

As for Stacey Head, you should consider the sequence of events:

The fact remains that there were clashes between police and protesters (0.00 / 0)
Councilmember Stacey Head should use a little more restraint, after all she is the elected official, and we expect more from our elected officials.

The Council should have known that there would be more than 300 people present for this hearing.  They obviously scheduled it this morning in an attempt to limit the number of people that appeared to voice their concerns.

This is an explosive issue, and we don't need to blindly criticize or defend either party.  Some of the protesters got out of hand, that is plain to see.  But the Council brought this on themselves.

And Councilmember Head?  She's a fool.  You don't act like a child in the face of angry people.  That gives them the moral high ground to act as they did.  She had the moral high ground, and chose to give it right back to the protesters by blowing kisses.

To me the BREAKING story is that the New Orleans City Council voted 7-0 to go ahead with the demolitions.

Please commit these names to memory:

Arnie Fielkow
Cynthia Willard-Lewis
Stacy Head
Shelly Midura
Cynthia Hedge-Morrell
Jacquelyn Brechtel-Clarkson
James Carter

(If I am incorrect on the names, please correct me!)

They now own this project and I, for one, will be very interested in how transparent they will be as they move forward with this.  I am also very interested in how the city, state and federal agencies involved give out information and how (ha ha ha!) transparent they will be.

As far as the protests, oh sweet lord -- since when in the past seven years has this country given a good goddamn about the poor?  Does anyone think folks will be writing about them a week from now?  It makes me cry.

But it is not the breaking story, imo.
