LA-06: Parish by Parish Breakdown - East Feliciana and St. Helena

This is the second of a series of posts on the voter turnout throughout the 6th CD in Louisiana.  You can view the first post here. In that post, I analyzed the voter turnout in Pointe Coupee Parish and West Feliciana Parish, which are on the northwestern edge of this district.  Tonight, let's move further to the northeast, shall we?

Vote totals post-flip.

Matt D :: LA-06: Parish by Parish Breakdown - East Feliciana and St. Helena
East Feliciana: Democratic Primary
TotalPctCandidate
675 40.56% "Don" Cazayoux
191 11.48% Jason DeCuir
50 3.00% Joe Delatte
532 31.97% Michael Jackson
216 12.98% "Andy" Kopplin

East Feliciana: Republican Primary
TotalPctCandidate
185 21.56% Laurinda L. Calongne
9 1.05% Michael Cloonan
544 63.40% Louis "Woody" Jenkins
120 13.99% Paul Sawyer

Cazayoux wins East Feliciana (pop 20,922) here, and Jackson demonstrates a hell of a rationale for staying in this race. East Feliciana, like West Feliciana has a damn near even racial divide (53/47 white/black). Our Dem turnout (1664 people) (versus 858 for the Republicans) is beautiful out here, particularly in a parish that Bush won in 2004 by a tidy margin (5021 to  4091 for Kerry).

Again, I must ask, is the turnout due to a slate of great candidates, or is it indicative of a revitalized Democratic party district(or state, or region, or nation)-wide?

St. Helena: Democratic Primary
TotalPctCandidate
226 26.78% "Don" Cazayoux
99 11.73% Jason DeCuir
16 1.90% Joe Delatte
439 52.01% Michael Jackson
64 7.58% "Andy" Kopplin

St. Helena: Republican Primary
TotalPctCandidate
56 23.33% Laurinda L. Calongne
1 .42% Michael Cloonan
148 61.67% Louis "Woody" Jenkins
35 14.58% Paul Sawyer

Congratulations are in order to Michael Jackson here, winning this Parish. St Helena is the Parish with the highest African-American population (54%) in the district. It's also very rural, and has the smallest population (10,759) of all places in the district.

Again, look at the GOP numbers! In this, a very rural district, a progressive urban (and black to boot) Democrat (Jackson) scores almost twice the number of votes of all GOP candidates combined!

To be sure, Bush scored 2,235 votes and Kerry received 3,173 votes, but we're seeing even better results this go-round.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I smell change in the air...

Next, the BR burbs of Ascension and Livingston

Thanky you for this analysis (0.00 / 0)
It's so exciting to see the huge Dem turnout in these rural parishes.  Hope it lasts until November.

I was speaking with Ryan today (0.00 / 0)
And, he brought to my attention the sort of rural v. city divide in our district. I suppose typically, I think of the BR Metro as black v. white, Catholic v. Protestant, swamp v. hills, and so forth.

Rarely do we see candidates from rural areas who are able to translate their popularity district-wide, and, I think the inverse is also true.

For instance, Jackson could win EBR with some effort, but would have to work quite a bit harder to win the outliers (save St. Helena).

EBR accounted for 32,000 Democratic votes. The other parishes accounted for 15,400. So, think of this as a 2/3 to 1/3 divide.

Meanwhile, Cazayoux, who enjoys tremendous popularity in the more rural areas, walked away with tidy margins in Pointe Coupée, West Feliciana, Iberville, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, and Livingston.

I believe Cazayoux will likely buck the trend, and I wish him great luck.
