LA-01: Walker Hines a "Progressive Democrat"???

Hat Tip to Oyster over at YRHT.

So I heard the other day that Walker Hines (D, H-95), a freshman Member of the State House here in Louisiana crossed party lines to endorse Repewblican Steve Scalise. I originally thought this more of the same old conservative Democrat wanting to kiss the arse of a Repewblican, and thus establish his conservative bona-fides to the conservative voters in his district.

But Dangerblond and Oyster have set me straight.

DangerBlond informs us that:

"[Gilda Reed] is endorsed by both the teacher's union and the NRA. She is in favor of universal medical care and she wants the troops out of Iraq. What more do you want?"

Oyster tell us all that Walker himself apparently penned an email to the late, great Ashley Morris, and Ray in New Orleans, which Ray posted on his blog prior to the legislative elections last fall:

"You will be pleasantly surprised by my passion, personality, background, and voting record. Unlike my opponent who tells you whatever you want to hear, I will never sacrifice my principles for popularity. I'm a progressive Democrat who believes in the Catholic values of social justice."

A progressive Democrat? Walker Hines? The one who endorsed a tax-cuttin', minimum wage opposin', War on Iraq supportin', immigration hatin' wanna-be quitter? Progressive? I think not.

Vote for Gilda. And if you can drop some coin, throw her some. She can use it. Hell, we all can use her in the Congress.

Reminds me a lot of Ashley Morris... (0.00 / 0)
Who railed against the "Yuppie Left", and their paper, the T-P. Morris' basic contention was that socially liberal people end up supporting right-wing candidates time and time again because they represent 'good government' and 'reform'. The "Yuppie Left" supported Nagin, a more-or-less lifelong Republican, and they also supported Bobby Jindal (both here in Baton Rouge, and in New Orleans).

Is Walker Hines more of the same? I sure as hell hope not.

Hines is a hypocrite (0.00 / 0)
Walker Hines is a hypocrite that will say anything and do anything that he thinks will benefit himself politically.  He has no interests in his constituents.  He is not a true Democrat.  He is one of the biggest proponents of Rep. Cameron Henry's anti-stem cell research bill, even though Hines suffers from juvenile diabetes, one of the diseases stem cell researchers think they may be able to cure through more research.

I am under the impression that Hines has already (0.00 / 0)
burned a lot of bridges with the state Democratic party, and so, he's doing this for two reasons:
1) An F you to the state party (particularly the Dems in the legislature)
2) He's trying to score points with the GOP... as he knows that he's going to have to back the winner here, and it's most likely going to be Scalise.
