Therein lies the rub, folks. Mr. Petal is under investigation by the FBI and IRS for his role in the Louisiana Film Tax Credit scandal that has already seen the "gate-keeper" of the State Tax Credit Program, a Mr. Mark Smith, indicted.
Why is this association an issue? Because the Louisiana Film Tax Credit was Steve Scalise's baby, as he and then-Senator Jay Dardenne authored the bills in their respective chambers back in 2002. It is now Act No.1 of the First Extraordinary Session in 2002.
Even more interesting is the fact that Scalise authored legislation to extend the tax credits, which expired on June 30, 2006 during the 2007 Regular Session. The bills he authored are HB 139 and HB 140. This is interesting because it came out not even a month after the bills were filed that the FBI was investigating the use of the tax credits and whether the use of them was on the up and up. Might Mr. Scalise have known the FBI was investigating his baby? The question that needs an answer is "what did he know and when did he know it?"
Lest y'all think this is just a progressive blogger flailing at the wind here ... Mr. Petal donated $2000 to Mr. Scalise's current political campaign. Has Mr. Scalise either returned the money, or donated it to charity?
