LA-01 + LA-06: Election Day ...

Well ... THIS IS IT. We're less than 12 hours from the opening of the polls. If you want to help Gilda's campaign in Orleans Parish, Jefferson Parish, or in the Northshore Parishes, call (504) 287.4328.

If you want to help out Don's campaign in the Capital region, call (225) 336.3338.

I'll be helping out the Cazayoux campaign in Baton Rouge throughout the day tomorrow, as I live here. I will update this hopefully once, maybe twice, throughout the day, with some turnout numbers. Be sure to check back here tonight after the polls close at 8 PM, as I will be live-blogging the results of both races.

GO. FIGHT. WIN.

Good Luck (0.00 / 0)
Technically, I'm a classified civil servant and am constrained from certain political activities (my understanding is that issue advocacy is ok, donating time or money to a particular politician or party is prohibited). To tell the truth, I doubt anyone would notice/care if I defied this, but I don't feel like finding out, particularly in the present economic climate.

Oh--and I can vote. Which I'll be doing. Too bad it won't be "early and often," but at least there IS a race. Geez: Baker had less opposition in the course of his career than your average Soviet Chamber of People's Deputies Delegate.

Anyway...slightly off-topic, but for the second time this season I saw Woody Jenkins. He was at the corner of Jefferson Hwy. and Corporate Blvd., waving his banner, etc. I want to think this might be a good sign, i.e., he doesn't have money to hire someone else to do this (a few weeks ago, I saw Woody over at Earth Day, and the lack of any crowd around him also makes me want to hope for the best)...

He's got people at every major intersection in town.. (0.00 / 0)
And in Ascension...

But... what really concerns me is the robocalls floating around ostensibly from Michael Jackson, encouraging African-American voters to stay home. Whether they are from Jackson or the various Republican-affiliated outlets, they are still very disturbing.

WTF? (0.00 / 0)
Seriously?  Robocalls supposedly from Michael Jackson to AA's telling them to stay home?  SERIOUSLY?  WTF?

"I was against NAFTA and CAFTA, and I'll be against SHAFTA."

The content goes something like this... (0.00 / 0)
"The Democratic Party has never funded any African-American candidate in this district, and Don Cazayoux has no endorsements from any African-American leaders in the community"

That's not it word for word, but, that's the general run of it.

and what was Cleo Fields back in the '90s? (0.00 / 0)
The Democrats helped him then.

"I was against NAFTA and CAFTA, and I'll be against SHAFTA."

Cleo Fields has been a good friend (0.00 / 0)
To the Cazayoux campaign, and his people (along with Cazayoux volunteers) are going to be up most of the night distributing signs that say: "Vote the Fields Ticket: Don Cazayoux"

Similarly, I believe that Joe Delpit is running the Neighbors for Cazayoux campaign...

We also know that Tommy Nelson (New Roads' mayor) has endorsed Cazayoux, and Kip Holden (Baton Rouge's mayor) has been a good friend of the campaign.

No, if it is Jackson, it's unbelievable. If it's the GOP, it's despicable.

Either way...

Do robocalls even work? (0.00 / 0)
I just read an article that said they are ineffective.

[ Parent ]
I don't believe they do... (0.00 / 0)
I read the first edition of that book (2004)... in that book, they said robocalls are effectively worthless as GOTV tools. Now, for vote suppression? Well, that's completely unexplored territory.

Also, I believe that direct mail and robocalls have been so overused that voters just tune them out.

[ Parent ]
I'm not sure it is from Jackson (0.00 / 0)
There have been a lot of reports lately of shadowy robocall going around. Just look at this Daily Kos diary about robocalls going out in different states trying to cofuse people as to whether or when to vote.

[ Parent ]
Neither am I... (0.00 / 0)
But, we'll know soon enough (and I'll post just as soon as I can confirm the source). We know full well that the GOP aren't above dirty tricks.

Oh, and apparently, Chas Roemer is doing robocalls for Woody.

At current count, this means that Laurinda Calongne, Woody Jenkins, Chas Roemer, and Frank Erdey will probably all be running in the fall....
