| Late last month, I called for a Draft Cravins for Congress movement, believing that Mr. Cravins could defeat current Congressman Charles Boustany.
It appears that the DCCC is taking that advice to heart, as the Independent Weekly printed this yesterday:
"The national Democratic Party is putting the full court press on state Sen. Don Cravins Jr. to challenge incumbent Republican Charles Boustany in the 7th Congressional District."
This is great ... but I have a slight problem with the following quote from Cravins, Jr,:
"Among other things, Cravins says he will be talking with Democratic Party leaders about his more conservative positions on social issues. Noting that Boustany signed on early to the presidential campaign of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is pro-choice and pro-gun control, Cravins says, "I think I can out-conservative Boustany."
Frankly, Mr. Cravins, if you try to run as a conservative, you will lose this race. It's that simple. When voters are given a choice between a real Republican and Republican-lite, they'll go for the real thing.
There are many Democrats who are pro-life. There are many Democrats who are in favor of the 2nd Amendment.
But there are few, if any, Democrats, that do not support labor. There are few, if any, Democrats that still support the War in Iraq. There are few, if any, Democrats who like having the federal government spying on the American people, as President Bush apparently does. There are few, if any, Democrats that agree with the President's veto of SCHIP. And finally, there are few, if any, Louisiana Democrats who support free trade deals like CAFTA.
If you're going to run as a Democrat, Mr. Cravins, act like one. |
