LA-Pres: Obama Can WIN Louisiana!*

E over at We Could Be Famous informs us of the latest poll on the Presidential race conducted in Louisiana by ARG, conducted over September 9-12 of 600 voters, with a margin of error of 4.5%. The overall findings are:

McCain Obama Other Undecided
Likely Voters 50% 43% 1% 6%

The cross-tabs show that Democrats have some work to do in shoring up the base, as well as convincing Independents that Obama is the best candidate:

McCain Obama Other Undecided
Democrats (51%) 22% 71% 1% 6%
Republicans (27%) 91% 3% - 6%
Independents (22%) 63% 27% 2% 8%

McCain Obama Other Undecided
Men (46%) 58% 35% 1% 6%
Women (54%) 43% 50% 1% 6%

The gender gap doesn't surprise me. I am surprised that more women are not supporting Obama, as McCain doesn't believe in pay equity, having refused to vote on it when it came up in the Senate earlier this year.

McCain Obama Other Undecided
18 to 49(59%) 45% 47% 1% 7%
50 and older(41%) 56% 37% 1% 6%

The 50 and older numbers don't suprise me, as older folks are generally more resistant to change. The 18 to 49 age cohort numbers are slightly suprising, as Obama leads in this age category by a larger margin nationally. Then again, Obama hasn't been on the air here in Louisiana, and what little news most folks are getting on the Presidential campaign is from the BSM.

McCain Obama Other Undecided
White (68%) 72% 21% 1% 6%
African American (32%) 2% 90% 1% 7%

These numbers are the least surprising of all. Expect to see the number of African Americans supporting Obama to go up to 95% or so by the time Election Day rolls around. As for the number of white supporters, there is a way for Obama to raise those numbers ...

All he has to do is make a swing through South Louisiana and talk about coastal restoration, and building CAT 5 Storm surge protection for REAL this time, along the lines of what the Dutch and Brits have done for their coastlines.

That will knock some Louisiana folks upside the head, and will take them away from McCain, as they will be able to say, "I met Barack Obama ... and he's not the spawn of the devil y'all been telling me he is." So, Obama campaign staff, if any of y'all are reading this, please, please, send the good Senator through Louisiana for two events - one in Houma, and one in Crowley or Jennings ... and let Barack talk to South Louisiana! * The asterisk is here because I don't think he can win without visiting the state and going on the air down here.

There's a problem with the Men/Women chart (0.00 / 1)
I wish it were the case, though.

I've corrected it. (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for pointing out the error.  More slop work!

It's pretty remarkable that McCain has lost around 11 points during the past month here in Louisiana.

They're not polling here as much as they are in so-called "battleground states," but we're seeing the same trends across the nation. Look at North Carolina and Florida, for example.

With less than 45 days to go, it's time for the Obama campaign to fully develop and execute a GOTV strategy in the South. The polls may not fully catch up with him, but with a well-executed ground game and GOTV effort, he can close the gap before anyone notices.

Obama campaign: Don't just focus on New Orleans. It's definitely important, but if what I have witnessed is any indication, it appears as if the volunteer apparatus is already there.

Seven points is easy to make up.

Here's my suggestion:

Ask Hillary and/or Bill Clinton to visit for two to three days. Clinton won Louisiana in 1992 and 1996, and they've campaigned extensively here. As the former Governor and First Lady of Arkansas, they both have plenty of friends here in Louisiana, and they'll inspire impressive turn-outs wherever they go.

Considering Obama is probably already a favorite to win in most of the urban areas (which he also carried during the primaries), McCain's seven point is probably a reflection of his support in smaller cities and in Northern Louisiana, which, by virtue of its border with Arkansas, the Clintons know well.

That's where they need to go. Places like Shreveport, Monroe, and yes, Alexandria. Of course, Baton Rouge and New Orleans are also obligatory and important stops.

If Obama has six hours to spare during the next 45 days, then he should spend them in New Orleans, shoring up his support. Maybe even taking a little time to visit Jefferson Parish, just to show he can inspire a bigger audience than McCain even in a Republican suburb.

An Obama visit, at this stage of the campaign, will force McCain to expend resources in Louisiana (or give it up entirely), and honestly, it could close the gap.

The numbers are there, and if any state deserves the attention of the leading candidate for the Presidency, it's Louisiana.
